Executive Summary

Northwest Harvest – Food Locker:
1 in 8 Washingtonians do not get enough food to meet their basic nutritional needs. Food banks are among the most popular food assistance programs in King County, yet their hours of operation
are restrictive.

Food insecure individuals who work during the day are too often unable to participate in these programs. With research showing that the majority of working-age Washingtonians who live in poverty are actively working or looking for work, our team saw an opportunity to better serve this population.

Recommendation:

The solution derived from our research methods encompasses a new point of access to nutritious food for the food insecure through a system of 44 refrigerated storage lockers available 24/7. Starting with the Cherry Street food bank and then expanding to all food banks within the Northwest Harvest Network, the solution is intended to help the food insecure population of King County in Washington and relieve their concerns of feeding their families and staying healthy.

Each locker will be restocked twice a day by the food bank volunteers with grocery bags filled with either grain-heavy, veggie-heavy, meat-heavy, poultry-heavy, or fish-heavy nutritional foods and easy-to-follow recipes. The lockers will be located right outside the Cherry Street food bank and will provide a 24/7 hour solution to those who work full time and can’t get to the food bank during its working hours. Those in need can simply drive up to the food locker, punch in their phone number and PIN, and grab their groceries for the week. The food insecure can sign up for their weekly grocery bank through the Cherry Street Food bank or online.

Through our research we believe our product would increase satisfaction and interest and add ways to gauge interest.
